30 years of San Diego food – how has time flown by so fast? It’s hard to believe I’ve been reviewing San Diego restaurants for three decades. It all started with a simple article about a rotisserie chicken shop in Encinitas, and now, 3,700+ reviews later, I’m still just as passionate about the city’s food scene. It hasn’t always been easy, but I’ve loved every minute of it.
San Diego chefs and restaurateurs have my deepest respect. Spending time in their kitchens, watching their dedication, and tasting their creations has been an incredible experience. I’ve tried recreating some of their dishes at home, but I’d be lying if I said they ever turn out the same. A recipe alone doesn’t make a great dish. It’s the skill, passion, and experience of the chef that brings it to life.
Over the years, I’ve seen San Diego’s restaurant scene evolve. When I first moved here, people claimed San Diego didn’t have world-class dining. I completely disagreed then, and I stand by that today. With Michelin-starred chefs, James Beard nominees, and a focus on locally sourced ingredients, San Diego’s food reputation has soared. From fine dining to must-try food trucks, San Diego has it all.
Year-round, San Diego has some of the best fresh ingredients around. I love seeing how chefs turn them into amazing dishes. The seafood is super fresh, the produce is always in season, and everything just tastes better. Lately, I’ve been fascinated with the hyper-local sourcing trend. Some restaurants are growing their own ingredients, and others are getting them from farms just 10-15 miles away. It’s awesome because the food is fresher, it supports local farmers, and it’s more sustainable. I love seeing how chefs are making the most of what’s right in their backyard.
To every San Diego chef, thank you for making the last 30 years of San Diego food so memorable. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this amazing food city.
