Alchemy Barrio Logan Brings Elevated Mexican Street Food

A Bold New Addition to Barrio Logan’s Food Scene

This is the story of three guys who wanted to open an elevated Mexican eatery and serve amazing food. Mission accomplished!  Alchemy Barrio Logan opened its doors in November. It was started with chef Marcus Twilegar, Eddy Cortez, and Juan Saad-Quintana. Seeing their passion and excitement was every bit as exciting as tasting the dishes. Alchemy Barrio Logan is located on the ground floor of a six-room hotel called Hotel Narcissus.

It is an ambitious project that has all the makings of being a runaway hit.  They have created a unique menu for Alchemy Barrio Logan, relying on their success with BarraCruda, a catering company specializing in Mexican fusion cuisine.  All the dishes I tried were exceptional, and the overall experience was so memorable.

The Vision Behind Alchemy: Elevating Street Food

Alchemy Barrio Logan focuses on elevated street food, emphasizing fresh, locally sourced seafood. Everything is house made, like freshly made pasta, using farm-to-table ingredients. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch.

The kitchen at Alchemy Barrio Logan is on the outside with giant glass windows allowing you to watch the chefs at work.   The outdoor dining space is cozy and has an industrial, gothic vibe. There is only seating for about 16 people, but they have plans to add additional seating. The restaurant aims to be upscale yet mysterious and affordable.  I loved hearing their plans to continually evolve the offerings.

Signature Dishes to Look Out For at Alchemy Barrio logan

The menu is small and focused.  Alchemy Barrio Logan’s intent is to serve just a few dishes, but to do them all right, works. There wasn’t a single dish that I tried that I wouldn’t order again.

CRUDO:

Hiramasa, cucumber, hibiscus, habanero, pomegranate salsa matcha, crispy leaks, avocado, pickled fresnos, tostada.  Using locally caught fish emphasizes their commitment to sea-to-table.

SHRIMP ZARANDEADO:

Adobo marinated wild shrimp, sweet peppers, tomato, potatoes, crispy leeks, pineapple salsa verde.  The shrimp are marinated and cooked over an open coal fire until they have perfect char marks.
