UPDATE: Aldea La Jolla has closed.
Alfonso’s of La Jolla used to be the spot where you could get big portions of food and margaritas on Prospect Street. Sadly, it closed after 40 years, but the latest restaurant in the space, Aldea La Jolla, is a welcome addition to Prospect Street.
Inside, the seating area is elegant and welcoming. The space is stylish but not too fancy, with comfortable chairs and tables that give a relaxed vibe. The layout gives enough room between tables, so you don’t feel too close to others. The bar area is modern and spacious, so if you are looking to grab a few cocktails, you’ll find that the seating is very nice.
Aldea CLOSED in March 2025. I’d recommend visiting one of these places, I’d consider the best restaurants in La Jolla.
The restaurant has a prime location on Prospect Street and is walkable from the stores, La Jolla Cove, and other attractions.
This Mexican-style restaurant has dishes and drinks inspired by the coastal flavors of Baja California. It has an elevated outdoor patio with great views and opportunities for people to watch. There are TVs and heaters outside, and the decor on the patio was very inviting. Since we can enjoy outdoor outdoors almost all year, I almost always choose to eat outdoors.

With a new chef, Chef Augie Saucedo, and a fresh menu, I was impressed with the quality of the dishes and plating. Chef Augie is a co-author of “Mexican Food: The Ultimate Cookbook”, covering coastal delicacies, hearty mountain dishes, and delicious street tacos.
The menu has some unique options, but it’s not too fancy—just really tasty food that you’ll enjoy whether you’re trying something new or sticking with your favorites.
COCONUT-MANGO CEVICHE – local white fish, habanero, radish, cilantro, pickled red onion, fried plantain
YELLOWTAIL AGUA CHILE – tomatillo, cucumber, radish, pepitas, pickled fresno chile, blue corn chips
AHI TUNA TOSTADA – kumquats, whipped avocado, jicama, chipotle aioli
FILET MIGNON TAQUITOS – cumin crema slaw, queso cotija, salsa macha, avocado mousse
LAGUNA BAY OYSTERS – green apple mignonette, salsa macha, lime
CHICKEN AL PASTOR TACO – grilled pineapple, avocado crema, pickled red onion
SQUASH BLOSSOM AND MUSHROOM TACO – if you are looking for a gluten and dairy free option, the flavor from the queso Oaxaca, pico de gallo and cilantro is wonderful.
SALSA MACHA RUBBED RIB EYE – patatas bravas, brussels sprouts, parsnip puree
CHIPOTLE AGAVE LACQUERED FAROE ISLAND SALMON – white beans, plums, jicama, chayote
The cocktails are creative and fun, with fresh ingredients that make them super refreshing. Whether you like something fruity, strong, or a bit more classic, there’s something for everyone. The wine selection is just as good, with a variety of choices that go perfectly with the food.
You can tell the staff really care about making sure you have a great experience. It’s the kind of place where you feel welcome and appreciated the whole time you’re there.
Located in the heart of downtown, on Prospect Street, Aldea La Jolla takes over the former Mermaids and Cowboys space.
