The Crack Shack
The Coop Deville sandwich is why people line up here, claiming it has the best fried chicken. Fried Jidori chicken breast, pickled fresno chilies, pickles, lime mayo, brioche bun. The Firebird (fried thigh, Cool Ranch, crispy onions, potato roll) is just as good. Crispy outside, juicy inside, every time I’ve been.

Double-fried, hand-battered, hand-brushed with sauce. The crunch holds up even after the sauce goes on, which a lot of Korean fried chicken doesn’t manage. Soy Garlic and Spicy are the two to get.

Tucked next to a donut shop and easy to miss, which is part of the charm. The chicken is seasoned well enough to eat plain, and the coconut syrup on the waffles isn’t as sweet as it sounds. Halal menu. Two locations.

Trust
Chef Brad Wise’s fried chicken sandwich here made the Michelin Guide’s roundup of the best in California, and it’s not close to the flashiest thing on the menu. Wood-fired everything else, but the chicken sandwich holds its own next to the raviolini and the burger. Worth going even if fried chicken isn’t the only reason.

I recommend Crispy Fried Chicken, 4919 El Cajon Blvd. Not a dine-in place, just take-out and DoorDash, but this bird is just about the best this Southern boy ever tasted. Lots of other yummy stuff on the menu, too. A real neighborhood institution!

You said it first! Crispy Fried Chicken is our family go to for great chicken or wings. I also get their shrimp fried rice as a side. Also a pleasant surprise. The place is not much to look at, but the chicken is absolutely worth it.
