We have a lot of fantastic sushi restaurants in San Diego, but if you’re looking for high-quality and inventive sushi, rooftop vibes, craft cocktails, and stunning views, Cannonball Sushi in Belmont Park should be right at the top of your list. It’s no wonder that it is on my list of The Best Sushi Restaurants In San Diego.
Now is a great time to visit Cannonball Sushi. Executive Chef Luis Romero has just released his new menu, which includes a selection of sushi, specialty rolls, small Japanese plates, and a nigiri and sashimi omakase-style plate.
While sushi still steals the show at Cannonball Sushi, the menu now includes shareable small plates that are perfect before dinner or with drinks. Dishes like lobster spinach dip and fresh local oysters pair well with Cannonball’s craft cocktails and sunset views, giving guests more to explore beyond just sushi.
- The Lobster Roll: a premium spicy lobster roll with tempura and aioli that brings a rich flavor to the sushi lineup at Cannonball Sushi
- Oishii Roll: fried oyster, avocado, tuna, and cilantro aioli with red tobiko that is both crispy and bold.
- Red Dragon Roll: tuna, tempura shrimp, cream cheese, spicy crab, and eel sauce for a spicy-sweet combo.
- My Shiromi Roll — a unique roll with crispy calamari and shishito pepper with yuzu oil and salmon roe.
- R&B Roll — this roll adds seared Brandt sirloin meat with chili garlic sauce and greens if you want something heartier.
The steak tataki from the starter menu at Cannonball Sushi is a delicious option. I had high expectations for quality as they use Brandt sirloin in this dish. Brandt is a family-owned, premium natural beef producer based in Southern California, known for its commitment to sustainability and available only at high-end restaurants. The tataki is served with ponzu, furikake, and garlic chips, and is served rare.
The Tuna Sensation roll at Cannonball Sushi has been on the menu for a while, but the chef has made a slight change to it, and it’s a must-order. Using both black pepper tuna and seared albacore, it has great heat from the jalapeno and aji amarillo sauce.
While it is hard to go wrong with anything on the menu at Cannonball Sushi, for those less adventurous, the small rolls might fit your taste buds. I’d recommend both the albacore and tuna roll. There is also nigiri and sushi available (salmon, yellowtail, tuna, etc.).
The craft cocktail menu is just as inventive as the sushi menu at Cannonball Sushi. One of the new drinks is the Cat’s Meow, with three rum blend, lime, banana, cinnamon, and tiki bitters. There is also a Lychee Lychee! with vodka, nigori sake, yuzu liqueur, and lychee. If you’re going to cannonball just for drinks, the bar area is fun and still has a great view.
When we have guests visiting from out of town, we love to take them to Cannonball Sushi. Located on the second floor of a building in Belmont Park, it has stunning views of Mission Beach. A great time to visit is just in time to capture a California sunset. Good food, drinks, and live music while watching the sunset is a winning combination.
