Smart Tips for Surviving Comic-Con Outside the Convention Center

  • Most Comic-Con pop-up experiences around San Diego are open to the public and do not require a Comic-Con badge. Some are completely free, while others use reservations or timed entry tickets. The biggest Comic-Con pop-up events can draw huge crowds, though, so showing up early is one of the best ways to avoid missing out.
  • Getting around downtown during Comic-Con week can be chaotic. The special event trolley is usually much faster than driving and makes it easier to reach areas like the Gaslamp Quarter, Petco Park, Balboa Park, and Seaport Village. If you plan to visit multiple Comic-Con pop-up locations in one day, it helps to map out a walking route ahead of time.
  • Social media is also essential during the event. Many Comic-Con pop-up experiences announce surprise giveaways, line updates, and reservation drops through Instagram Threads, and X. Following the official brand accounts can help you find last-minute openings before everyone else does.
  • You’ll also want to come prepared for long days outside. Bring water, snacks, and a portable phone charger since you’ll likely spend hours taking photos, scanning QR codes, and checking maps. Comfortable shoes are a must because most people end up walking several miles between activations, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Finally, bring a backpack or tote bag because freebies are everywhere during Comic-Con week. Many Comic-Con pop-up events hand out posters, collectibles, shirts, stickers, and other swag throughout the day.

One clarification – a Comic Con badge is NOT required to visit the Comic Con Art Show in the Hyatt. Everyone can visit, everyone can purchase!
