But if we are being honest, sometimes the best meals come from hidden gem restaurants. Or from a recommendation from a friend.

San Diego has some fantastic hidden gem restaurants. Sometimes they are tucked away in quiet neighborhoods, strip malls, or even behind little signage. These restaurants don’t rely on flashy marketing or ad campaigns. They win customers the old-fashioned way: with incredible food.

Everyone raves about San Diego’s taco scene, but let’s talk pizza. While Buona Forchetta has multiple locations across San Diego, the one hidden in South Park is easily one of the best Neapolitan pizzerias in town. This spot is one of San Diego’s hidden gem restaurants.

  • Margherita Pizza – Classic, simple, and cooked in an imported Stefano Ferrara wood-fired oven

CEASARINA - FOR ITALIAN FOOD

Tons of locals call this Italian spot one of San Diego’s hidden gem restaurants. It’s not flashy, but the pasta and cocktails are excellent, making it a true hidden gem restaurant.

What to order

  • Pastificio – choose the shape of the freshly made pasta, and then choose the sauce
  • Mozzarella Milanese – deep-fried breaded “fior di latte” mozzarella

The Crack Shack – Fried Chicken Worth the Hype

San Diego has no shortage of fried chicken, but The Crack Shack still stands out. With spots in Little Italy and Encinitas, it’s casual and open-air, but the food is anything but basic. They use organic, free-range chicken and season it like they mean it. You can taste the difference. Hidden gem restaurants like this make dining a real treat.

What to order

  • The Firebird – A spicy fried chicken sandwich with pickles and cool ranch dressing.
  • The Coop Deville – The pickled Fresno chilies, pickles, lime mayo, and napa cabbage work so well together
  • Hand-Cut Fries – They are tossed in schmaltz & crack spice. If you love fried chicken, this place is a must.

Wolf in the Woods – One of San Diego's Best Hidden Gem Restaurants

You drive through a lovely neighborhood before arriving at this restaurant that is very popular with locals. With limited seating inside and just a few tables outside, a reservation is a must. Executive Chef Carmine Lopez’s dishes are spectacular – both in flavor and plating. One of the best hidden gem restaurants in the city.

What to order

  • Baked focaccia – Trust me, you will not want to share this bread that is freshly baked
  • Sweet corn and pinon soup – It’s consistently considered the best soup in San Diego
  • Yellowtail aguachile – The flavor from the serrano peppers adds the perfect amount of heat. It is no wonder that this restaurant was named Restaurant of the Year in 2024 by San Diego Magazine.

The Lion’s Share - exotic meats and craft cocktails

The Lion’s Share is a little off the beaten path, and more likely a destination restaurant than just stumbling upon it. But that has not stopped the popularity of the restaurant, which is now celebrating its 13th year in business. Featuring exotic meats and craft cocktails, the decor and vibes make it a must-visit. You’ll find unforgettable dishes at hidden gem restaurants like this.

What to order

  • Cold smoked burrata – Really well paired with the prosciutto, pears, candied pistachio, arugula, and lemon
  • Chicken & Caviar – Until you have tasted the juicy, golden brown fried chicken pieces paired with luxurious caviar and crème fraîche, you are missing out
  • Wagyu steak frites – this generous portion of steak and fries is topped with a miso bordelaise and chimichurri butter. If you do not have a reservation, be prepared for a wait as this late-night bar and restaurant is popular with both locals and visitors.

Ciccia Osteria – A Hidden Gem Restaurant with Michelin Recognition

Set in an old home with both indoor and outdoor seating, Ciccia Osteria is worth the drive to Barrio Logan to enjoy a meal here. This place stands out even among hidden gem restaurants.

What to order

  • Start with one of their signature XXL Boards: Antipasto Miso, or Vegetariano
  • Before ordering pasta, be sure to check their daily specials (which are handwritten on paper)
  • If you have an appetite, the Milanese would be my strong recommendation. Ciccia Osteria has Bib Gourmand status, signifying “great value for money”.

Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub - North County's most eclectic restaurant

Even since they opened Wrench & Rodent, the sushi has been off-the-chart creative, especially seeing as it comes from two Brits who focus on sustainability.  If you love fresh seafood and inventive sushi, this is the place. Hidden gem restaurants like this keep locals coming back.

What to order

  • Omakase – If this is your first time here, this is the best way to taste the creativity.
  • Daily Specials – Read the daily specials list very carefully, as they truly are special
  • Salmon Nigiri – With sweet citrus salt. If you are not able to get a reservation here, go to one of their other restaurants that are equally as creative: The Plot (vegan food) and Shoots Fish & Beer.
