Why Lionfish Restaurant Is a Top Sushi Spot in the Gaslamp

Lionfish Restaurant

There are a lot of restaurants in downtown San Diego, but very few keep me coming back year after year. Lionfish Modern Coastal Cuisine is one of them. I’ve been dining here for years, and each meal there continues to impress me. When someone asks where to eat in the Gaslamp Quarter, Lionfish Restaurant is always near the top of my list.

The focus on fresh seafood

The quality of the seafood at Lionfish Restaurant is the reason it is so popular. Everything tastes fresh and clean. This restaurant respects its ingredients and uses the highest-quality fish, seafood, and produce. Lionfish Restaurant proves that great seafood does not need a lot of extras.

Sushi Worth Sitting Down For

Although they also offer meats, sushi, and seafood, it is where Lionfish really shines. The fish quality is excellent, and the rice is consistent every time. The nigiri is simple and precise, and the rolls are creative without being messy. If sushi is your priority, this is one of the best downtown spots to slow down and enjoy it. Lionfish Restaurant takes sushi seriously.

The Chef’s Approach

One big reason Lionfish feels so special is the chef leading the kitchen. Executive Chef Jose “JoJo” Ruiz is a San Diego native who shapes the menu with deep local roots. Ruiz began his culinary path at age 16, working his way up through San Diego kitchens and training in sushi and seafood techniques.

Right in the Heart of the Gaslamp

Located inside the Pendry Hotel, Lionfish Restaurant sits in one of the best spots in the Gaslamp Quarter. It works for date night, celebrations, or dinner before a night out. The decor is modern and lively, while still comfortable and unpretentious. Lionfish Restaurant has done a great job hiring staff, as they are always excited to share recommendations on seasonal dishes.

Why I Love Recommending

At the end of the day, it’s the food that keeps me loyal to Lionfish Restaurant. The menu changes, but the quality never slips. I know I’ll get great seafood, excellent sushi, and a meal that I’ll be talking about for days afterward. After all these years, Lionfish Restaurant is still one of my most recommended places downtown. Chef JoJo Ruiz is also the Executive Chef and a partner at Serea Coastal Cuisine in the Hotel del Coronado
