Rustic Root is a cool spot in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter with a laid-back rooftop vibe. It’s a restaurant where you can grab tasty food. And enjoy a view of the city at the same time. They serve new American-style dishes with a twist. The menu has everything from a 28-day dry-aged ribeye to lobster pappardelle. The rooftop setting makes it perfect for hanging out with friends or having a casual dinner, especially at sunset. The drinks are fun too, with some unique cocktails that are great for a night out.
Although they also have indoor dining, I love the rooftop dining area. It gives you a unique experience with great views while you eat. You get to enjoy some fresh air and perfect San Diego weather. You can see the city lights during sunset, and it feels more relaxed and exciting compared to sitting indoors.
Rustic Root now has a new spot in Solana Beach. The space is relaxed and easy to enjoy. It follows the same style as the Gaslamp location. You get the same focus on American food and clean flavors. The new Rustic Root makes it easier for North County diners to stop in without the drive downtown. It is a good choice if you want a calm coastal setting.
This American-style restaurant serves up creative dishes and drinks that bring a modern twist to classic favorites. The rooftop patio offers awesome city views and is a great spot for people-watching. With heaters and comfy seating, the space is super welcoming. The seating around the fire pits offers the best viewing of the restaurant. The also have live music which adds to the ambiance.
Like the other restaurants in RMD Group (Huntress, Lumi), the emphasis is on a good meal. In addition to the dining seating, there is a bar area where you can enjoy drinks with friends.
I can honestly say there isn’t anything on the menu at Root Root, that I wouldn’t order again. The menu changes on occasion, but all of my favorites are still on the menu. The dishes are beautifully plated, and you can see the emphasis on quality ingredients. The portions are generous, and I’ve never made it to the dessert course here.
While the menu offers some fresh takes, it’s still down-to-earth. Just tasty, satisfying dishes that cater to both adventurous palates and familiar favorites.
My favorite appetizers on the menu are the:
HOMESTYLE BUTTER BISCUITS – artisanal maple pecan and charred jalapeño butter
HEIRLOOM TOMATO BURRATA – heirloom tomato salad, herb oil, micro basil, aged balsamic
FIRECRACKER SHRIMP – sriracha aioli, sweet and spicy mango sauce, espelette pepper
There have been just a few changes to their “seafood and pasta” and “meat and bird” menus. But all my favorites and sides are still available.
ROASTED ATLANTIC SALMON – roasted summer squash, sweet and sour eggplant, black olive caper vinaigrette, micro arugula, pine nuts
FILLET FRITES – 8 oz grilled filet mignon, blue cheese butter, parmesan fries, pickled onions, garlic aioli
28 DAY DRY AGED RIB EYE – 16 oz Creek Stone Farm table-smoked rib eye. Served with tomato gratin, sherry roasted onions, and cabernet reduction
CAST IRON CORNBREAD – cheddar and roasted jalapeno chili, spiced honey, artisanal maple pecan, and charred jalapeño butter
The drinks at Rustic Root are every bit as creative as the food. If you see someone ordering the Lavender Haze, it’ll be just minutes until more tables order it. It’s delivered in a creative glass in a smoke-filled dome. If only getting one of each cocktail were an option.
It is no wonder that Rustic Root is so popular. I recommend making a reservation, especially for rooftop dining and the weekend. They also offer a happy hour available Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
If you are looking for a dinner location in the Gaslamp Quarter, Rustic Root is a great option. It is consistently recognized as one of the best rooftop restaurants in the area.
Monday-Friday: Open at 5 pm | Saturday & Sunday: Open at 10 am
San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter is home to some of the best rooftop dining experiences due to the year-round great weather.
