Pizza lovers in San Diego just got a big win. San Francisco’s award-winning Slice House by Tony Gemignani has officially opened its first fast-casual location in Little Italy. If you’re serious about pizza, this place is worth checking out. And the good news is that Slice House San Diego has the quality and flavor that made it popular up north. I talk about Slice House in detail here. But if you’re curious about other spots nearby, check out Little Italy’s best restaurants.
Created by pizza legend Tony Gemignani, this fast-casual restaurant focuses on fresh ingredients, creative toppings, and classic techniques. Slice House San Diego is one of the most talked about pizza spots in Little Italy. Here’s what to expect when you go.
One of the best things about Slice House San Diego is the daily pizza specials. Every day, they rotate between New York-style and Detroit-style pizzas. If you’ve never had Detroit-style, don’t skip it. I’m usually not a fan, but their Popeye pizza totally changed my mind. It has cheddar, mozzarella, spinach, garlic, and ricotta that is baked in a deep-dish rectangular pan.
Owner Tony Gemignani isn’t new to making pizzas. He’s a 13-time World Pizza Champion and holds four Guinness World Records. You can taste the commitment to quality ingredients after one bite. They use authentic Prosciutto Di Parma that’s been cured for 12 months, type 00 artisan flour blend, and peppadew peppers imported from South Africa. If you are walking through Little Italy, Slice House San Diego is hard to miss.
There’s one slice you can’t find anywhere else: the “America’s Finest Slice in San Diego.” It’s loaded with vodka sauce, pepperoni, hand-crushed tomatoes, ricotta, basil, and Romano, all on a sesame seed crust. It’s bold and super flavorful. Every location has a uniquely flavored pizza. Slice House San Diego gets busy fast, especially during peak dinner hours.
The pizza is the star, but the sides hold their own. The pasta, meatballs, and salads are all really good. And if you’re looking for a deal, check out their happy hour Monday through Friday from 3 to 5 pm. Buy a craft beer, and you’ll get a slice of cheese or pepperoni for just $3.50.
If you are gluten-free or vegan, they have a gluten-free, cauliflower crust pizza that they are very proud of. They also have vegan pizzas, cheese, and pepperoni available.
This Tony Gemignani pizza is a great addition to Little Italy, and judging from the lines when I went, it is going to do so well. We have great pizza choices, and this place will be popular when people are looking for a place where to eat pizza in San Diego.
The best part is that more Slice House San Diego locations are on the way. So while this one in Little Italy might pose some parking issues, the next one will be in a convenient location. “Have you tried Slice House yet? What did you think?
