The Best Restaurants in Little Italy You Need to visit

Little Italy restaurants are some of my favorite places to eat in San Diego. The food’s legit, the cocktails and wine are solid, and the whole neighborhood has a good energy. You can smell garlic and pizza in the air, but it’s hard to decide where to go. If you’ve ever felt stuck trying to choose, here are the spots I always count on.

If you want to be updated on newly opened Little Italy restaurants, join the list to get trusted food tips from someone who knows Little Italy.

kettner exchange

Kettner Exchange restaurant was on my list of top three restaurants in 2023 and 2024, and will undoubtedly be back on my 2025 list. The food, decor, and service are all impressive.   The modern American menu with Asian influences is from Executive Chef Brian Redzikowski. It has both innovative and diverse dishes. They are mostly tapas style intended for sharing. I’d recommend going hungry so that you can enjoy many of the dishes here, including the mushroom tan tan, spicy tuna crispy rice and duck meatball. Definitely one of the best Little Italy restaurants.

Herb & Wood

The dishes from Chef Aidan Owens at Herb & Wood are spectacular. The dishes taste fresh, inventive, and focused on local produce. The menu changes seasonally and regularly. They also have a bluefin tuna tasting menu every Thursday (three courses for $65). The vibe is both stylish and relaxed. Both the indoor and outdoor seating feel welcoming. The cocktail menu is creative and as detailed as the dishes. You will have a memorable San Diego meal you’ll want to photograph and talk about. One of the best Little Italy restaurants.

Piedra Santa

My first meal at Piedra Santa Steakhouse in Little Italy was one of the best meals I’ve had in San Diego. The space is warm, elegant, and beautifully designed. I see so many people looking and taking photos of the Himalayan salt-lined aging room and open kitchen. I’d recommend starting with the flaky empanadas and house-made chimichurri. They have a great selection of meat, and the ribeye was smoky and full of flavor. The service was outstanding, and the energy in the room just feels special. You can taste why Little Italy Restaurants get so much attention.

Cloak & Petal

One of the standout Little Italy restaurants that blends design, energy, and Japanese-inspired cooking is Cloak & Petal. The space itself is a big part of the experience, with cherry blossoms, graffiti-style artwork, and a layout that shifts between lounge-style seating and a more dramatic dining room setting inspired by an underground Tokyo feel. The menu focuses on sushi, small plates, and shareable dishes that lean modern while still keeping strong technique at the core. The presentation of the dishes are as as polished as the flavors, and it’s great for a night out.

JUniper & IVY

Juniper & Ivy was popular the day they opened, and 11 years later, it is still just as popular. They keep their menu fresh with a chef-driven menu that’s always changing based on the season. The food’s super creative and full of bold flavors. It’s set in this cool old warehouse from the 1920s that is visually stunning. Consistency has shown that they are more than just hype. It’s one of the reasons Little Italy Restaurants draw so many food lovers.

camino riviera

UPDATE:  This restaurant closed in November 2025.  Camino Riviera is also from Executive Chef Brian Redzikowski. The menu is inspired by coastal Mexican cuisine. Often with very bold and vibrant ingredients. While there is plenty of indoor seating, it’s the chic, tropical vibe of the outdoor patio that’s my favorite. This upscale restaurant has one my favorite dishes: Caesar Salad “Twinkie.” Order it and you will understand why.  The menu changes seasonally, but I hope “The Taco” will always stay on it. This dish explains why people love Little Italy Restaurants.

POSTINO LITTLE ITALY

While I will confess that I have not been to Postino Little Italy, I have dined at their locations across the country, including the newest one in Del Mar. I am sure that Little Italy location is just as incredible. I was so pleased that San Diego finally got two locations.  The bruschetta boards are a standout, with a variety of unique and flavorful toppings.  They also have great happy hour deals and a wine/bruschetta board deal after 8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. You see the charm of Little Italy Restaurants in every bite.

LALA

Lala is one of the newer restaurants in Little Italy. But it’s immediate popularity is no surprise as it is from Busalacchi Restaurants – they also own Barbusa, Nonna, and Zucchero. Lala emphasizes the use of fresh, high-quality ingredients in their Italian dishes. The new menus features a short rib arancini which is a must order. Pair your meal with their craft cocktails, or grab a drink at the bar, you’ll enjoy the trendy vibes.  This is one of the Little Italy restaurants that you’ll not want to miss.

Crudo Cevicheria & Oyster Bar

I have enjoyed both dinner and brunch at Crudo Cevicheria & Oyster Bar, and look forward to returning every time I visit. The food is fresh and  delicious, the decor is modern and welcoming, and the staff are always so friendly.  The attention to detail is evident not only in the way each dish is plated, but their strong focus on using quality seafood.  Their seafood tostadas are among the best I have had in San Diego. It shows why Little Italy Restaurants are worth the visit.

rOvINO

Rovino was on my list of top restaurants I dined at in 2023. This cute restaurant with mostly outdoor seating, has great food and service. I don’t normally order rotisserie chicken when dining out, but it’s easy to to see why it’s a signature dish. Enjoy a cocktail, dine on some delicious Italian food, and watch the neighborhood walk by. This restaurant fits right in with the best Little Italy Restaurants.

ROMAN WOLVES

Roman Wolves is an Italian restaurant and bar dedicated to Roman cuisine.  Expect to find pastas, pinsa and suppli on the menu. The decor is quite stunning, and on a Saturday evening, it can get quite busy. The food is just as delicious as their other restaurant, Rusticucina, although the menu have no similarities. It’s one more reason Little Italy Restaurants have a loyal crowd.

Sorrento Ristorante

Sorrento Ristorante in Little Italy offers a menu filled with traditional Italian flavors with a modern twist. The handmade pasta dishes are among my favorite – if the lasagna is on the menu, I’d highly recommend it. The cozy ambiance and attentive service make it an ideal spot for both a casual dinner or a special occasion. Their food captures the heart of Little Italy Restaurants.

KING AND QUEEN CANTINA

UPDATE: The restaurant closed permanently on 2/28/26.  If you are looking for something other than Italian food, King and Queen Canina has a menu with a fusion of Mexican and Asian cuisines.  The cocktails are inventive and perfectly complement the lively and fun vibe of the restaurant. Overall, it’s a great spot for a fun night out with friends, with both the food and drinks sure to impress. They also have great prices for their happy hour. You get flavors here that match the best Little Italy Restaurants.

QUEENSTOWN PUBLIC HOUSE

Queenstown Public House is a fantastic spot for a laid-back meal with a bit of Kiwi flair. Situated in an old home with unique, rustic decor, both the indoor and outdoor dining areas are charming.  The menu features a mix of New Zealand-inspired dishes, and the lamb burger is my favorite item on the menu. The service is friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home. On the weekend, the outdoor patio is always packed with people enjoying San Diego’s beautiful weather. It’s easy to see why Little Italy Restaurants stay popular.

MONELLO

The house-made pasta at Monello is exceptional – the quality and flavor reminiscent of being in Italy. The ambiance is cozy and vibrant – perfect for a romantic date night or a casual meal with friends. Pro tip: Before ordering, check to see what the daily special is on the cheese wheel. Monello is one of the popular Little Italy restaurants, so make a reservation.

Hi! What is the dish you posted under Rovino, the fish and asparagus? It’s looks amazing!

  2. Superb blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m totally overwhelmed

Thank you for the recommendations. I am taking my Northern California friends out for dinner in Little Italy. Looks like Rovino with the Sea Bass and Aspargus dish. However, my wife Erna would like Monello for the steamed Mussels.

    1. You can’t go wrong at either restaurant. The fish of the day changes at RoVino, so you may want to check on that dish.
