DINING AT A REVOLVING SUSHI BAR FOR THE FIRST TIME

At a revolving sushi restaurant (also called kaiten-zushi, sushi train, or conveyor belt sushi), you grab the plates of sushi that you like as they pass by your table. You can also order other dishes from a touch screen or a waiter. It’s fun, fast, and delicious.   They are very popular in Japan where they first debuted in 1970. You can find chains like Kura Sushi San Diego in the States.

TIPS FOR DINING AT A CONVEYOR BELT SUSHI RESTAURANT

  1. While you can’t make a reservation, you can download the Kura Sushi App from the Apple or Google Play store and put yourself on the waitlist.  If you are in the neighborhood, stop by to add your name to the waitlist using the iPad at the front door.  They will send you a text to let you know when to return to the restaurant.
  2. If it’s your first visit, ask and your server will show you how to remove plates from the conveyor belt.
  3. If a dish passes by, and you later want it, you can always wait for it to go around again, or use the touchscreen screen to order it from the kitchen. It will arrive on the conveyor belt right above your table.
  4. Understand the pricing – not every dish is $3.15.  You will pay by the plate. After you finish a dish, slide it into the slot and their system will automatically start adding up the number of plates you have consumed.   If you order through the touchscreen, the price of each dish will be added to your bill.  A good rule of thumb is that all the items on the conveyor belt are the same price – the ones you order may not be.
  5. Etiquette says that if you touch a dish, you must take it. This is a perfect way to make sure that you are not getting dishes that multiple customers may have already touched.
  6.  Check out the monthly specials.  While most of the dishes never change, they do offer seasonal specials.
  7. If you go with a friend, you’ll have a chance to try more dishes, as most are served with two pieces.
  8. You will find chopsticks, a dish for soy sauce, soy sauce, and pickled ginger already at your table.
  9. Have fun – it is a memorable dining experience.
